List of Most Commonly Used Functions in Microsoft Excel
1. SUM()
SUM() function is used to perform addition in Excel. All you need to do is just click on the cell where you want the resulting sum to appear and type =SUM in the formula bar on the top. Enter the list of the cell which you want to calculate or you can enter the first cell and the last cell separated by a symbol. Instead, you can select the list of cells you want to add after entering the =sum in the formula bar.
Example: =SUM(A1:A10)
2. PRODUCT()
PRODUCT() function is used to perform the multiplication of cells in Excel. Click on the cell where you want the result to appear and type =PRODUCT in the formula bar. Select the list of cells that you want to multiply or simply add the cells either separated by a comma or the first and the last cell separated by a colon.
Example: =PRODUCT(A1,A2)
3. LEN()
LEN() function is used to calculate the number of characters in a cell including white spaces. All you need to do is select a new cell, type =LEN in the formula bar and enter the cell location for which you want to calculate the length.
Example: =LEN(A1)
4. MAX()
MAX() function can be used to find out the cell containing the maximum number from the list of cells. Just select a new cell and type =MAX in the formula bar. Then either select the list of cells or enter the first cell and the last cell separated by a colon.
Example: =MAX(A1:A10)
5. MIN()
Similarly, MIN() function is used to find out the cell containing the minimum number from the list of cells. All you need to do is just type =MIN in the formula bar and select the list of cells or enter the first, and last cells separated by a colon.
Example: =MIN(A1:A10)
6. AVERAGE()
AVERAGE() function is used to calculate the average of the range of cells. Select a new cell where you want the result to appear and type =AVERAGE in the formula bar. Â Enter the list of cells either separated by a comma or type the first and last cell separated by a colon.
Example: Â =AVERAGE(A1,A2,A4,A5)
7. SQRT()
Use this SQRT() function to find out the square root of a given number. Just type =SQRT in the formula bar followed by a number within () braces to get the result.
Example: =SQRT(25)
8. NOW()
To get the current date and time NOW() function is used. Select a cell and type =NOW(), then hit enter to view the current date and time within the cell.
Example: =NOW()
9. DAYS()
DAYS() function can be used to calculate the number of days between two dates. Type =DAYS in the formula bar and enter the start and end date to get the number of days as the result. Remember to enter the end date first and then the start date to get the positive number of days.
Example: =DAYS(D2,D1)
10. ROUND()
ROUND() function is used to round off the number in a cell to the required number of digits. Just type =ROUND and enter the number, the number of digits to be rounded off separated by a comma. You can also use =ROUNDUP(), and =ROUNDDOWN() functions to round up or round down the numbers.
Example: =ROUND(121.256,1)
